Gujarat-born Moxila Upadhyaya presided over Trump’s case in US court

Moxika Upadhyaya (img:X/@RonBanter)Former US President Donald Trump appeared before the US Magistrate judge on Aug 3 in the case of conspiring to overturn the results of the 2020 US Presidential elections. The judge who was hearing Trump’s case was Moxila Upadhyaya, a Gujarat-born US magistrate. She was appointed as a Magistrate judge last year.However, the trial will not be further handled by her. Further proceedings in the case will be conducted by US District Judge Tanya Chutkan. The first hearing is scheduled for Aug 28.Magistrate Upadhyaya earned her journalism degree in MissouriGujarat-born Moxila Upadhyaya grew up in Kansas city in the USA. She earned her bachelor's degree in journalism from Missouri School of Journalism and completed her honours in Latin from the University of Missouri.Upadhyay earned her Juris Doctor (JD) from the American University Washington College of Law.After graduating from the Law college, she worked as a law clerk with the former chief judge of the DC Court of Appeals, Eric T Washington for two years.Gained ample experience in the field of lawAfter serving as a law clerk, Upadhyay joined the Washington DC office of a law firm, where she practised many challenging cases involving commercial and administrative matters.She then steered ahead and left the law firm in 2011, and joined as a first clerk to the then-District Judge Robert L Wilkins.After working with the District Judge, she rejoined the law firm as an associate and eventually a partner, and worked with them until her appointment to the bench. She had a significant contribution in the DC Innocence Protection Act and the DC Incarceration Reduction Amendment Act.Gujarat-born Moxila now holds key position in top US courtMoxila Upadhyaya was appointed as a US Magistrate Judge on Sept 7, 2022.
